The Brown Basilisk is a striking semi-aquatic lizard native to Central and South America, known for its distinctive crest and impressive ability to run across water surfaces. These active reptiles can reach 24-30 inches in length and require spacious enclosures with both terrestrial and aquatic areas.
Proper care includes a 75-gallon minimum tank with warm basking spots (85-90°F), UVB lighting, and high humidity levels of 60-80%. Provide live plants, branches for climbing, and a large water area for swimming and soaking. Feed juveniles insects daily and adults 3-4 times weekly, including crickets, roaches, and occasional small fish.
Brown Basilisks are best suited for experienced keepers due to their specific environmental needs and somewhat skittish temperament. They thrive with minimal handling and benefit from a calm setup away from household activity. With proper care, they can live 10-15 years in captivity.
