Kenyan Sand Boas are small, docile constrictors native to East Africa, making them excellent pets for both beginners and experienced keepers. These snakes typically reach 16-24 inches in length and feature distinctive coloring in shades of tan, orange, and brown with darker markings.
These boas thrive in warm, dry environments with temperatures between 75-85°F and require a substrate that allows for burrowing, such as aspen or cypress mulch. A 20-gallon breeder tank or larger provides adequate space. They are generally calm and handleable, though they prefer minimal handling outside of feeding times.
Kenyan Sand Boas feed on appropriately-sized prey—frozen-thawed mice or small rats—typically every 7-10 days. They have a long lifespan of 15-20 years with proper care, making them a long-term commitment. Provide a hide box, shallow water dish, and maintain humidity below 40% to prevent respiratory issues.
These snakes are relatively low-maintenance and quiet, making them ideal for apartment living. Their gentle temperament and manageable size appeal to keepers seeking a rewarding reptile companion.
